OVERVIEW OF A SUMMER WITH YRP

MENTORING

Each student is paired with their own mentor for the summer to complete a research project. Research is presented at the end of the summer as a poster session in a public symposium (open to friends and family!).

WEEKLY SEMINARS

Every week a speaker discusses various college application steps and life tips.

We also include talks about:

  • The Student Loan Crisis - what is it, why is it happening, and how can students avoid or minimize the risk of becoming a statistic?

  • Impostor Syndrome - Why do we feel like we are not good enough to succeed?

  • Healthy College Habits - Peer pressure, depression, Freshmen 15, and more issues are discussed in a way to encourage healthy habits to avoid these circumstances.

  • Diversity Panel - We bring several undergraduates from various backgrounds to speak about unexpected struggles and success of college life!

  • Sleep - Sleep is the foundation of our health. Unfortunately, our society encourages poor sleep habits. "All-nighters" in college are normal occurrences too. We discuss proper sleep hygiene and the benefits of good night sleep, as well as the dangers of sleep deprivation.

  • What Makes A Great Science Talk? Science shouldn't be in an ivory tower. We teach students to discuss science among peers and professionals.
